It is hard to imagine what had happened to Fatima*. It is hard to describe the silence that swallowed the voices of the spectators of her death. I think the artworks on Facebook which had returned her head, portraying it as an orchard of flowers, a moon or a sun, tried hard to compensate for this horrifying silence, and to relieve Fatima, relieve her beloved ones, and relieve all of us.

What can be done for a little Syrian girl who had “lost” her head?!

The case of Ms. Fatima Khalid Saad presents a disturbing example of such practices.  In spite of the dark smoke and the smell of fire that filled the air around us, my cousin said to me: “let us go down and find out what happened”.

Hours had passed while we were hiding in our houses, like frightened mice who did not dare to go out. It was said that they were killing everyone who gets out of the old neighborhood in “Jdaidet Artouz” (1). Many houses had been burning around us since Friday morning. I saw the columns of smoke and inhaled its smell.

We followed groups of women and children, who were with a small number of men, jogging towards the olives orchards. They were out of breath; heading to a pre-determined destination, near the orchards. هل وصل النظام السوري إلى نهاية المطاف؟ مع بالغ أسفي، أقول إنه لم يصل بعد. سيتعامل الأسد مع الوضع في سوريا كما فعل في العراق ولبنان، وسيبذل كل الجهود ليمزق البلاد. أذكر في العام 2005 حين قال لي صديق مقرب من النظام السوري آنذاك، إن الأسد والعصبة حوله مؤمنون بقدرتهم على إفشال كل محاولات جورش بوش لتغيير النظام الحاكم في سوريا. وقالوا وقتها: “يعتقد بوش أن بوسعه استخدام العراق ضدنا، لكن العراق ليست بالأمة، ونحن لن نوفر جهداً في قلب السحر على الساحر، وستتحول العراق إلى مستنقع تغرق أمريكا وسطه. هذا ما فعلناه مع إسرائيل وأمريكا في لبنان في ثمانينيات القرن الماضي.”

El viaje a Alepo estos días está plagado de peligros. Además de las posibilidades de que haya bombardeos indiscriminados, que siempre se esperan, al viajero puede sorprenderle un tanque escondido junto a la carretera general o un control “móvil” [1] del ejército regular, como lo llama la gente de la zona. Nuestro conductor, un  joven llamado Hassan y que pertenece al Ejército Sirio Libre (ESL), intenta evitar los caminos principales en la medida de lo posible, conduciendo en cambio por caminos serpenteantes entre los pueblos. Su mano tiembla sobre el volante cuando se ve obligado a circular por un tramo de la autopista que lleva al aeropuerto de Alepo. Sus ojos están clavados en un tanque  parado a una distancia no muy lejana, y se encomienda a que “Dios haga que no nos vean”, según expresa.

Robert Fisk ventured in the company of Syrian regime forces into Daraya [a town just outside Damascus], to cover the death of 245 of the locals– according to him; more like 500 in reality. Who killed them? The “rebels”, says Mr. Fisk. They are seen throughout his article to be sniping people, shelling the peaceful military base – from which Mr. Fisk started his journey along the invading troops – with artillery fire, and shooting at the armoured military vehicle that was transporting him with a Syrian army officer. نفى العديد من قادة الثوار السوريين الذين التقيت بهم في إدلب وحلب وبشكل قاطع وجود مقاتلين أجانب داخل البلاد.  يقول أبو عزّام: “يمكننا الدفاع عن أنفسنا. لاحاجة للأجانب هنا”. وأبو عزّام هو نقيب قد انشق منذ شهر وهو الآن قائد لواء في مدينة الباب بمحافظة حلب.

أيمن، وهو شخصية معارضة بارزة في إدلب لم يرغب بنشر اسمه كاملاً، كان أكثر إيجابيةً “جميعنا إخوة في الإسلام، والإخوة يساعدون بعضهم البعض، نحن نرحب بالأجانب إذا كانوا أناساً جيّدين ومن الممكن التعامل معهم، مثل الذين في لواء الأمة. المشكلة أن ليس كل القادمين جيدين”.

النجار (حسام) يتذمر من محاولات نظام الأسد تصوير المقاتلين من جنسيات أخرى مثله على أنهم متطرفين مرتبطين بتنظيم القاعدة. “هذا ليس جهاد تنظيم القاعدة، هذ ثورة شعب، ونحن نريد أن نقدّم المساعدة”.
