“Hegelianism of the poor” is a sarcastic phrase. It is well known that Hegelianism was in its heydays a revolutionary and elite ideology in principle, attributed to Hegel (1770-1831) the founder of the German idealistic philosophy. However it remains mere theories and presumptuous ideas generated from a thought that is nothing but an intellectual luxury, similar to all dogmas and intellectual approaches preaching such ideas that carry false promises, like Stalinism, Marxism, sectarianism,… and which we can label as “Hegelianism of the poor”. It even can be generalised to all forms of neo-colonialism around the world, for example France’s president Hollande’s visit to Africa, as a sarcastic example! Accordingly I here generalise it to our intellectuals who deserve this label. استمر في القراءة

“The elite support base” — it is probably the first time this term is used; as it is more common, especially in revolutionary vocabulary, to use “popular support base.” Although the elite are considered part of the public- theoretically at least- the term “popular support base” commonly refers to “the non-elite.”  “Popular support base” is used as a positive addition to a “revolution” that is led by an elite vanguard according to the terminologies of traditional revolutions, which were transferred without change to the new Arab Spring revolutions.

Paradoxically, what distinguishes the new revolutions is that they are not revolutions of the elite. This problematizes terminology and the revolution itself which has became inverted. Therefore, it is justifiable to coin the inverted term “the elite support base”, not to dispraise or to disparage. No one was able to escape the vicious circle of sectarian dictatorship without this new revolution which happened without any planning or vanguard leadership and even without any elite.

The Pathological Denial of the Revolution’s Facts

Among opponents of the Syrian Revolution, there is a state of amazing denial, which exceeds refutation of its legitimacy, the undermining of the nobility of its cause and the questioning of its practices, and attempts to deny its very existence. Why do racist European right-wingers and some factions belonging to the far left find a common ground in their hostility towards the Syrian revolution?

The Conditionality of some Intellectuals

Although the author directs this article toward “elitist” and “recalcitrant” Arab intellectuals the Free Syrian Translators Team feel that the same criticism can be directed towards many international “experts” and “analysts” on the Arab region, for their lack of support of the Syrian Revolution and or “neutral” opinions.

Some Arab intellectuals have grown accustomed to contempt and disdain of their own societies as well as focusing their criticism on these societies under the pretext of their backwardness, them succumbing to tyranny, and their susceptibility to oppression. Yet as soon as these societies have risen in revolutions and uprisings (some of which are legendary by means of grit and courage) to overthrow tyranny and confront its consequences, those intellectuals have gone silent or started to dictate the conditions upon which they would decide whether to support these societies while they face the guns and knives, or remain “neutral”.
